CLOS DE VOUGEOT

2020 Grand Cru Domaine Faiveley

EN PRIMEUR

Tasted twice - once from barrel in the cellar at Nuits. Then a cask sample in London. Both times this showed richness and polish. A very classy - generous Clos Vougeot. Perhaps not the most sophisticated of their Grand Crus - but a total charmer. Laden with ripely juicy red berries. Nicely fine powdery grip builds on the finish.L&S (Nov 2021)

Coming from the center and lower portions of the Clos, Jérôme remarked that this can ripen quickly if the vines receive a bit of water as harvest comes around. This has a svelte palate feel with a lightly creamy and mouthcoating texture nicely juxtaposed by integrated acidity. The tannins are chunky but smooth. Tiny blackberries flit across the palate and into a long finish. Drinking range: 2025 - 2040 Rating: 95 Christy Canterbury MW - TimAtkin.com (Feb 2022)

The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is excellent, unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berry fruit, cassis, orange rind and spices, framed by a deft touch of classy new oak. Full-bodied, layered and muscular, it's rich and concentrated, with lively acids and a long, resonant finish. This is one site that clearly thrived in this warm, dry vintage. Rating: 93-95+ William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)

(blended from 3 separate lieux-dits, two near the bottom and one near the top). This is also aromatically restrained with its ripe mix of black and red raspberry, plenty of earth and discreet spice and wood wisps. I very much like the texture of the round, rich and markedly powerful big-bodied flavors that deliver outstanding length and solid depth on the compact finale where the only nit is a touch of warmth. Patience advised. Drinking range: 2035 - Rating: 92-94 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2022)

Cask sample. Mid crimson. Smells juicy and red-fruited. A sweet/sour contrast between the sweet red fruit and the high acidity. Smooth, refined texture but not fully meshed. Drinking range: 2027 - 2035 Rating: 16.5+ Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Jan 2022)

A dense purple but not black. Deep dark fruit also on the palate, firm tannins, even a little youthful bitterness, which helps to tame the fact that the alcohol is a little bit higher here. Nothing dried out, this is just a Clos Vougeot on a relatively large scale. Tasted: November 2021 Rating: 93-96 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2022)

The 2020 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, comes from three parcels, two at the bottom and one in the middle) has a slightly ripe and more outgoing bouquet than the Echézeaux with wild strawberry, raspberry, touches of brown sugar and kirsch. Surprisingly sweet towards the finish, this almost overdelivers in terms of fruit, though it is just missing a little finesse on the finish. Still, it feels harmonious and minerally and I suspect will age well in bottle. Drinking range: 2025 - 2048 Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Nov 2021)

The Faiveley family are the largest vineyard owners in Burgundy, owning around 120ha, spread across the Côtes de Nuits, Beaune and Chalonnaise and encompassing everything from generic Bourgogne up to the grandest of Grand Crus. Their holdings supply the grapes for 5 out of every 6 bottles made by Faiveley, the balance being bought in from carefully selected contract growers.
