GEVREY CHAMBERTIN

2020 1er Cru Cazetiers Domaine Faiveley

EN PRIMEUR

An imposing Gevrey in 2020, the Cazetiers, usually so refined - has taken on the tell-tale breadth and depth of the vintage and it is noticeable here as this can be very precise for Gevrey in less warm years. But there is no over-ripeness or fat excess - this is a broad and somewhat imposing Cazetiers laced with firm mineral lines and dark berry fruit. Will be fascinating to see how this changes with time.L&S (Nov 2021)

Packed with cherry, kirsch and raspberry fruit, this red also sports an edge of clove, vanilla, licorice and sandalwood. Densely textured, with concentration and a tightly wound finish. This has all the right components. Best from 2026 through 2043. Drinking range: 2026 - 2043 Rating: 95 Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator (Mar 2023)

Explosive nose of sour cherry with notes of wet earth and spice, then a very energetic and structured, medium-bodied palate that doesn't leave any doubt, thanks to the intensity and wonderful harmony. Very long, focused finish that's very cool and clean. Drink or hold. Rating: 95 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Jul 2022)

These vines are suffering quite a lot due to the several recent years of dry summers. Showing a glimmer of purple in its deep core, this is nonetheless incredibly rich in concentration. In fact, it's almost chewy. It smells a bit like a spice bazaar, and its palate is rich with black cherries and gaminess. Don't rush this, though it is admittedly fascinating to see its youthful vigor. Drinking range: 2024 - 2037 Rating: 95 Christy Canterbury MW - TimAtkin.com (Feb 2022)

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers is brilliant, unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, plums, dark chocolate, spices and vanilla pod. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's elegantly muscular, with a deep and multidimensional core and a long, expansive finish. It's worth a special effort to seek out. Rating: 93-95+ William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)

(from a huge 3.96 ha parcel). Once again there is a lovely sense of freshness to the more restrained, even brooding, dark berry fruit nose that is cut with hints of the sauvage and just turned earth. The dense, powerful and gorgeously textured larger-scaled flavors brim with both dry extract and minerality before concluding in a complex, balanced and sneaky long finale. Excellent potential here. Drinking range: 2032 - Rating: 91-94 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2022)

Cask sample. Mid cherry red. Smells very ripe, almost raisined, though it is the very end of the bottle so perhaps not in perfect condition? Sweet damson contrasts with a stemmy dry texture. Drinking range: 2025 - 2032 Rating: 16 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Jan 2022)

Bright vibrant purple, this is exuberant, wearing its heart on its sleeve. On the richer side, I was thinking possible 14% but Erwan confirms 13.5%. It has retained all its balance, and can offer a very pretty long juicy cherry finish. Tasted: November 2021 Rating: 92-94 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2022)

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru has a very well-defined bouquet with vivacious red cherries, strawberry and crushed rock aromas. This has a little more attack than the Lavaux, partly because of the low yields, under 20hl/ha. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a little creaminess in texture on the entry, very smooth with a slightly candied finish that just compromises its potential delineation. Still, this should drink well for 15- to 20 years. Drinking range: 2026 - 2048 Rating: 91-93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2021)

The Faiveley family are the largest vineyard owners in Burgundy, owning around 120ha, spread across the Côtes de Nuits, Beaune and Chalonnaise and encompassing everything from generic Bourgogne up to the grandest of Grand Crus. Their holdings supply the grapes for 5 out of every 6 bottles made by Faiveley, the balance being bought in from carefully selected contract growers.
