GEVREY CHAMBERTIN

2020 Évocelles Domaine Dugat-Py

EN PRIMEUR

The vines here are over 70 years old on average. It's on the Brochon side of the appellation, which, says Loïc, is why it was never classified as a Premier Cru. 'It's on the hillside and has the finesse of a Premier Cru'. Dark sweet berries, cassis and cherry, sleek and silky, terrific juicy acidity, spices and minerals all coming together in harmony. There's a wild character to this which sets it apart.L&S (Nov 2021)

It seems that these vines are the perfume counter of Gevrey-Chambertin, though Les Evocelles actually sit in the bordering commune of Brochon. Loïc says there is very little soil - between 10 and 30 centimeters - before the vines are in the limestone. Plus, these are all old vines of about 70 years on average. And, this nice, one hectare chunk sits in the heart of Evocelles. This is a wine that I could just smell for hours. It is pure and intense on the nose with dark cherries and crushed black pepper. The finessed tannins meld nicely with the vibrant acidity, and it wraps up with a minerally, smoky and long finish. Drinking range: 2022 - 2033 Rating: 94 Christy Canterbury MW - TimAtkin.com (Feb 2022)

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles unfurls in the glass with aromas of wild berries, orange rind, exotic spices, wilted rose petals and burning embers. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, its velvety attack segues into a deep, tightly wound core of pure, vibrant fruit that's framed by beautifully refined tannins and lively acids. It's a communal bottling that makes a mockery of the appellation hierarchy. Rating: 92-94 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)

(vinified with 50% whole clusters). A more floral and earthier though less spicy array of black cherry, cassis and floral top notes. The refreshing, fresh and pure flavors are super-sleek and more mineral-driven while displaying fine length and depth on the balanced if mildly austere finale. This too is an excellent villages and well-worth your attention. Drinking range: 2030 - Rating: 90-93 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2022)

On and over the border with Brochon, so denied premier cru status (!). Rocky, limestone soils. 1 ha in total. Old vines (70 years). Cask sample. Medium cherry hue; jousting acidity, and sweet fruit. Red- and black-berried fruit, and a leafy freshness. Long – almost stretched. Drinking range: 2028 - 2038 Rating: 16.5 Matthew Hayes, www.jancisrobinson.com (Jan 2022)

Domaine Dugat-Py, along with only DRC, Roumier, Rousseau and Leroy, is rated in the top Three Star category by the 'Classement' published by the Revue du Vin de France. These are the essence of robust Burgundy, wines of huge scale and concentration. Patience is required, so lay down a few grand bottles for your dotage.
