Totally unique yet seductive, the 2020 Rosso di Montalcino Ginestreto wafts up with a wild mix of ginger spiced cookie, sour cherries, zests of tangerine and violets. This is a seductress on the palate, silky and supple, with a pretty inner sweetness and mineral-tinged red berries that add a more tactile feel toward the close. Purple and blue-toned inner florals resonate throughout, as the 2020 finishes with a gentle tug of tannin and a staining of wild berry preserves that keep me looking back to the glass for more. This may not be the longest-lived rendition of Ginestreto, but it will certainly make fans of Fuligni very happy over the next three to five years. Drinking range: 2022 - 2025 Rating: 92 Eric Guido, www.vinous.com (Dec 2022)

Lustrous mid ruby. Balsamic, lifted nose with hints of exotic spice (20% new oak tonneaux) and iron. Gorgeous, elegant, lifted raspberry and cherry fruit with lots of juice but with a medium-bodied feel. Juicy finish with a nice tannic bite and perfumed red fruit with touches of oak. Drinking range: 2023 - 2030 Rating: 17++ Walter Speller, www.jancisrobinson.com (Dec 2022)

Rosso di Montalcino Fuligni bears the name Ginestreto, under which it is well-established in the market and renowned as a high-quality product. It too derives from a careful selection and is partially refined for some months in French oak tonneaux. The Rosso boasts a strong fruity flavour and is infinitely flexible when it comes to food pairings.Winemaker's notes (Oct 2022)

Fuligni

Founded in 1923 by Giovanni Fuligni, the estate today is co-owned by Robert Guerrini Fuligni and his delightful aunt Maria Flora Fuligni. Together with his aunt, Roberto makes the wines with oenologist Paolo Vagaggini and his son Jacopo, while agronomist Federico Ricci looks after the vineyards.

The estate covers 100 hectares, of which 25 are under vine, almost all planted with Sangiovese, with a small amount of Merlot for the IGT blend. 4 plots, Semiti, San Giovanni, Ginestreto and Cotimeli produce Sangiovese for the Brunelli and Rosso and each vineyard is kept separate during fermentation. What is important is the combined height of the vineyards (350-440m), the density of planting, age of the vines (12-30 plus) and the 'galestro' soils on which they are planted. Fuligni's wines have reached international recognition for their purity of expression, strong backbone of acidity and polished tannins.

These are simply the finest wines of Brunello, epitomising all that is great from the region. The 'Rosso' now comes from a defined part of the vineyard, on clay and tufa rather than the marl of the Brunello. It is made from the outset as a Rosso, with different clones and the intention to make a wine which will be approachable at a much younger age.
