Cos owner Michel Reybier and winemaker Dominique Arangoïts always go to great pains to explain the vagaries of each vintage with exquisite detail before tasting their wines. This in-depth analysis brings more understanding to the resulting flavours. And so it was that after a very rainy winter (a record since 2000), there was a good budbreak, and fertility seemed promising. Then, it was cold and rainy, affecting flowering with millerandage on Merlot and coulure on Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. This impacted yields greatly, and the harvest was one of the lowest ever at 29 hl/ha. These lower yields meant that even though there were infrequent showers throughout the vendange, the fruit achieved perfect ripeness, which is clear to see in the glass. The result is a stunning Cos nose of opulence and power, with beauty and control in equal measure. I love Pagodes in 2024, and it is certainly a wine to hunt down, but this Grand Vin takes the Pagodes model and turns up the volume delivery a grander and more all-encompassing composition. The tannins are sensational: old-school, bitter, teasing and Nebbiolo-like and the finish is incredible. While this is not a rich, heady, voluminous style of Cos, it is every bit as engaging as the wines found in more ostentatious vintages. 2024 Cos is a more controlled, stealthy and well-drilled wine with immense class and tone, and it will age like clockwork.

Highly textural, with layers and depth, this shows savoury and slim black fruits, real finesse, beautifully precise and grippy texture, cocoa bean, espresso, lovely quality. This feels genuinely old school in the best sense of the word. Harvest 23 September to 7 October. 3.52 pH. 20% new oak, 46% 1st wine. Drinking range: 2030 - 2044 Rating: 94 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (May 2025)

There is huge depth and lots of intensity from this year's Cos. Quite powerful, deeply colored and dense, but there is freshness. Concentrated and tight-grained, with a full body and a pretty lengthy finish. Quite unique for its broadness and density, with lots of blackberries in the finish. The 2024 Cos d'Estournel was picked from September 23 to October 7 and matured in 50% new oak. This has an atypically powerful bouquet, revealing black fruit laced with graphite and gravelly scents. The palate has a Pauillac-like entry that's fresh but certainly intense. There's plenty of grip in this Cos d'Estournel that's a little sweeter and reassuringly persistent on the finish compared to its peers. It does not deliver the mineralité of a top-flight Cos d'Estournel, though there's certainly much more fruit intensity than you would expect given the growing season. I observed more classicism during my second record, which suggests that the depth of fruit may become more prominent during barrel maturation. Readers should note it displayed more depth and precision on my second visit on the final day in Bordeaux. Drinking range: 2032 - 2065 Rating: 93-95 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2025)
