A floral nose of deep fruit, dark berries, cherries and violets. Structured and medium- to full-bodied, with firm, integrated tannins and a medium-long finish. 43% cabernet sauvignon, 40% merlot, 12% cabernet franc and 5% petit verdot. Rating: 92-93 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2025)
Sage and white pepper spice, bright fruits, carefully balanced, leans into the vintage. Harvest 27 September to 7 October. 3.70 pH. Yield 16.72 hl/ha, the lowest ever after hail. They were on third year of organic conversion but chose to suspend this year. No second wine as a result also - they just really focused on the best of what remained. 30% new oak for ageing, in 500l casks, and amphora. Drinking range: 2028 - 2038 Rating: 89 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (May 2025)
The 2024 Le Crock was picked from September 27 to October 7 at just 17 hl/ha. It is in its third year of organic conversion, so the mildew was acute. The Cuvelier family made the decision to discontinue and use minimal synthetic treatments instead. It has a straightforward, quite tensile nose with crushed stone filtering through black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, maybe just missing some depth and grip though there is ripeness on the peppery finish. Give this a couple of years once in bottle. Drinking range: 2027 - 2039 Rating: 88-90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2025)
Château Le Crock
Château Le Crock is in Saint Estèphe in the northern Médoc. The imposing current Château was built by the Merman family at the beginning of the nineteenth century and is surrounded by magnificent gardens. The vineyard is around 33 hectares (82 acres) and touches two of the most prestigious châteaux of the appellation, Château Cos d’Estournel and Château Montrose.
It is owned by the Cuvelier family, which also owns Château Léoville Poyferré in Saint Julien. The Cuveliers were originally wine merchants in Lille in northern France and Le Crock was their first vineyard purchase, in 1903, so has a special place in the affections of the family, many of whom spent their summers there. The Cuvelier properties were run with considerable flair by Didier Cuvelier for forty years. 2018 his cousin Sara Lecompte-Cuvelier took over at le Crock. Under Jonathan Servant, who runs the vineyard, the soil is worked mechanically, to avoid the use of herbicides, and with sexual confusion techniques to avoid the use of pesticides. The consultant oenologist is Michel Rolland. Grape Varieties: 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot. In the classification of the Crus Bourgeois in early 2020, Le Crock was elevated to the status of Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel.- For full delivery details see our Delivery page.
