CUVÉE SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL
2006 Brut Champagne Pol Roger

This has changed substantially since it was first released, becoming much more complex than it was. A whiff of petrol can be found on the ripe aromas of baked apple, brioche and soft floral scents along with an abundance of yeast character plus just a hint of roasted almond. The exceptionally rich yet powerful flavors possess an almost creamy mid-palate mouthfeel despite the presence of a firm supporting effervescence that also shapes the sappy and wonderfully complex finale. This is a bold, indeed even robust, vintage for this famous cuvée that to my taste is now drinking perfectly. This isn’t to say that it won’t continue to hold well but I doubt that there will be much development going forward. This is first-rate and every time I have it I wonder if I’m not being a bit too conservative with my rating. Drinking range: 2024 - Rating: 94 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Oct 2024)

Deep with impressively lively and tiny bead. Very intense with a fresh mint note. Round and magnificent. Excellent freshness. Impossible to spit. Beautiful balance. Satin-textured. Not as cigar-fumed as some vintages! A little mushroomy. Drinking range: 2016 - 2030 Rating: 18.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Aug 2017)
Like Fred and Ginger, this dances gracefully on the palate, with rich and expressive flavors of peach tart, raspberry sorbet, candied ginger and orange peel, and sleek acidity that leaves a mouthwatering impression on the satiny finish. Drink now through 2031. Drinking range: 2017 - 2031 Rating: 95 The Wine Spectator, www.winespectator.com (Aug 2017)
Champagne Pol Roger
Champagne Pol Roger is one of the very few remaining houses still owned and run by the founding family, who remain responsible for the winemaking and selection of the cuvées each year.
Originally founded in Aÿ in 1849 by Pol Roger, the firm then moved to Épernay in 1851. The First World War had a huge impact on the firm, putting any expansion plans to rest, and Prohibition in America made exports much more difficult.
During the Second World War when the Germans occupied France, all production and buying of Champagne was controlled by the Wehrmacht.
However, the War caused Winston Churchill to become a prominent figurehead throughout the world, and his love of Pol Roger was widely known. So much so that the House created their special Cuvée Winston Churchill in 1975.
