(from vines in Lutenière that are below La Croix Blanche and Au Dessus de la Rivière that were at one time considered to be Vosne villages before the AOC system was established; 14.7% in 2019). A very ripe nose consists of poached plum, cassis, black cherry and warm earth. The succulent, round and caressing middle weight flavors possess both excellent volume and a plush mouthfeel before concluding in a complex if slightly warm finale. Even so, this well-made effort carries its elevated level of alcohol surprisingly well. Drinking range: 2023 - Rating: 86-89 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2021)

The 2019 Bourgogne Rouge is showing beautifully, wafting from the glass with generous aromas of cassis, blackberries, exotic spices and rich soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety, it's intensely concentrated, with lively acids and powdery tannins, surpassing any expectations of the appellation with its amplitude and depth. Cropped with extremely low yields of 20 hectoliters per hectare, this old vine cuvée is the highest alcohol of the Mugneret family's 2019s. Rating: 89 - 91+ William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)

Most of the vines date back to 1955, with a new plantation from 2015 just beginning to come on stream. The yield was 20 hl/ha and the alcohol reached 14.7% - they always get high degrees here, it would seem. From 2020 they will put the lieu-dit Les Lutinières on the label. Dense purple, with a classical balanced juicy deep fruit, stays fresh. Powerful in the intensity of fruit rather than the alcohol. Quite firm at the finish, but still relatively classic. Tasted: November 2020 4/5 stars Rating: 86-88 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2021)

Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg

Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg was founded in 1933 on the marriage of Jeanne Gibourg and André Mugneret. Holdings then consisted of Bourgogne, village Nuits, village Vosne and Echezeaux. Their son Georges, an opthalmologist by day, added to the vineyards, but his acquisitions (Nuits 1ers Crus Vignes Rondes and Chaignots, Chambolle 1er Cru Feusselottes, and Grands Crus Clos Vougeot and Ruchottes Chambertin) were kept separate as Domaine Georges Mugneret.

On Georges' death in 1988, his widow Jacqueline and daughter Marie-Christine took over. Marie-Andrée, the younger daughter joined them a little later having completed her studies as an oenologist. In 2009 Jacqueline retired and the two domaine names were put together to become Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg, ending the prior confusion of labels.

The sisters have proved more than safe hands as far as the winemaking is concerned, and these are top-flight Burgundies with that elusive balance of enough concentration allied with delicacy of expression and the capability to age well. All the vineyard management has been brought in-house (the domaine previously relied on two métayeurs for part of the vineyard) and the quality has reached new heights, its wines some of the most sought-after in the Côte de Nuits.

In 2017 Marie-Christine 's daughter Lucie joined the domaine, and Marion and Fanny, daughters of Marie-Andrée are now also part of the team.
