We hesitate to use the word 'icon' in connection with wine ever since Jancis Robinson came up with the question 'is that one word or two?', but it is appropriate for some of the wines launched onto the market via the Bordeaux 'place' at this time of year.
The 2011 is a true classic of the style, less tight and a bit more spicy than some vintages on release. Nevertheless slow to open up, it has penetrating concentration in a mid-weight body, a nose which in its tobacco and cedar-box aromas shows a perfect ripeness, but is in no way overbearing.
