You may have noticed us making quite a fuss over the years about the fantastically good Pinot Noirs from Bodegas Chacra in Patagonia. But, planted alongside the 1955 vineyard is a block of Merlot vines and we haven’t made nearly enough noise about them. Here is the noise.

The Gambero Rosso tasting of Messorio starts "In three words? Baciato dalla grazia. In one? Fantastico" and goes on to note it at 96/100.

i Clivi was created when Ferdinando Zanusso bought two dishevelled old vineyards in the early 1990's. They were in a poor state but were rescuable and their age has become key to i Clivi's success.

Rather too many wines at once today - the Lafite stable, which of course includes the top Pomerol l'Évangile topping off a little rush of releases. A shame because there are some stories here - Jean-Luc Thunevin's Valandraud (£895) has been elevated to 1er Grand Cru Classé status from this year, and is a fab wine if you are into this sort of modern style - it is done with real panache.

SOLD OUT On Thursday 13th December we are hosting our final wine dinner of 2012, in one of our favourite dining rooms in London, the private room at the River Café, with the wines of Castello del Terriccio. Patrick Sandeman was the first 'outsider' (not from the estate staff) other than the consultant oenologist Carlo Ferrini, to taste these wines, back in the early '90s.

For once I think it really helps an understanding of the weather to understand the variation and style of the wines of Bordeaux in 2011 - although nothing is ever completely deterministic and odd surprises still exist. The story of the the 2011 harvest began with the dry Indian summer of 2010, which stayed fine long after this fine harvest was in the cellars.
