On Wednesday we published our immediate thoughts on the wines of the Right Bank (see 2018 Bordeaux En Primeur: Right Bank Roundup). Here are our first impressions from the other side of the river and a list of wines we felt were outstanding within their quality level or commune.
Fine wine has long been a popular choice for christening presents. As the wine matures, so too does the recipient and eventually, many years down the line, a choice will be made whether to drink the contents or sell. Every year we are asked by godparents about purchasing wine and laying it down on the child’s behalf.
The following wines have been released by Château Latour in small volumes. These wines represent the last releases from the property for these wines, and the last chance to buy ex-chateau stock. They come with proof-tags and back labels saying they are the 2014 release.
The 2011 is a true classic of the style, less tight and a bit more spicy than some vintages on release. Nevertheless slow to open up, it has penetrating concentration in a mid-weight body, a nose which in its tobacco and cedar-box aromas shows a perfect ripeness, but is in no way overbearing.
In recent vintages the Bordeaux primeurs campaign has been an unruly affair, stretching out until the beginning of the summer holidays with no one wanting to be the first to jump. This year it seems to be the opposite..

2011 Vintage Port - General Declaration of a Classic Vintage Port vintages are only 'declared' by the shippers/producers when the quality is deemed to be on the very best, and often they do not agree. The 2011 has brought a unanimity seldom seen, and as Jancis Robinson titled her article these are 'The best 2011 reds anywhere'.
