The theme, such as you need a theme beyond ‘Christmas’, was to put a few less likely wines in front of people, to test and tantalize the taste-buds. With that in mind, we left out the traditional option of Champagne, and kicked off with the very splendid Gusbourne 2008 Brut Reserve from the Garden of England, a zippy but textured fizz that works really well as an aperitif.

On a pleasant Wednesday evening in late September, 30 eager tasters gathered in the LEA & SANDEMAN shop in Chiswick to taste Portuguese wine and to drink in words of wisdom from a very special guest speaker. We were honoured, thrilled and really rather excited to have secured, courtesy of Wines of Portugal, the services of the great Charles Metcalfe for the evening.

Last night Lea & Sandeman hosted the NSPCC City Fine Wine Challenge for the sixth year running. Twenty four tables of ten, from leading city companies including KPMG, Grenpact, Diligenta and IBM, packed the room at RIBA following a聽Champagne Benedick reception,聽to take part in the interactive quiz while tasting eight wines, mostly blind.

The Lea & Sandeman Autumn tasting was great fun for us all, attended during the day by many journalists and聽trade buyers, and聽in the evening by nearly 200 paying customers, many of who took advantage of the evening's offer to refund their ticket in full against the value of orders taken on the night.
