Bordeaux 2025
Vintage Overview
The 2025 Bordeaux vintage is defined by precision, balance and freshness, achieved through a growing season that combined warmth, drought and perfectly timed rainfall. The result is a small but high-quality crop of wines that reflect the continued evolution of modern Bordeaux: refined, expressive and increasingly accessible in style.
A mild, wet winter and further spring rainfall topped up the healthy soil water reserves - which would come in very handy in the hot months that followed. The mild spring temperatures supported an early and even budbreak and flowering. However, reduced bud fruitfulness - linked to the challenging 2024 season - naturally limited yields from the outset.
The summer that followed was warm and predominantly dry, with periods of significant heat from mid-June through August, including several spikes above 40°C. Crucially, these conditions were moderated by consistently cool night-time temperatures, preserving good juicy acidity and increasing aromatic complexity.
Rainfall in late August proved decisive. Arriving at exactly the right moment, it relieved drought stress and allowed the vines to complete ripening under balanced conditions. Harvest began early, among the earliest on record, with whites picked from mid-August and reds from late August for some finishing up in the last week of September, largely in excellent conditions.
Yields are low, often between 20 and 30 hl/ha, with reduced flowering in the spring – and small berry size from the heat, natural concentration in the berries was great, but yields were hugely reduced. Despite the warm growing season, alcohol levels are moderate, typically ranging from 12.5% to 13.5%, which further supports the overall harmony of the wines.
In the cellar, producers have adopted a restrained approach, with gentle extraction and careful élevage with dialled back oak usage and widespread use of concrete, and amphorae for some elements of the ageing. This has resulted in wines of surprising balance - emphasising purity, texture and terroir expression over power.
Style and Quality
The 2025 wines are deeply coloured, with vibrant red and black fruit profiles, supported by ripe, finely textured tannins. They combine concentration with freshness, showing notable energy, lift and precision. Natural acidity is well preserved, giving the wines balance and clarity rarely seen in warmer vintages.
Tannins are structured yet refined, providing ageing potential without compromising early approachability. Stylistically, the vintage sits between the richness of recent warm years and the freshness of more classic vintages, offering both immediate appeal and long-term potential.
Across the Region
Quality is strong across both Left and Right Banks. Cabernet Sauvignon performed particularly well on the Left Bank, while Merlot excelled on clay and limestone soils on the Right Bank. Importantly, the consistency of the vintage extends beyond the leading estates, with excellent wines available across a broad range of appellations and price points.
Conclusion
Bordeaux 2025 has produced some super wines with great balance and wonderful precision. They combine concentration with freshness and moderate alcohol levels. With limited volumes and strong quality across the region, we are hoping for a sensible pricing strategy form Bordeaux – if they can get this right - 2025 represents a compelling opportunity for both drinkers and collectors. You will never be sad to open these bottles – let’s hope that common-sense prevails.
