While I enjoyed the lush older vintages with their flamboyant oak and hedonistic richness this stylish, cooler, more dynamic model is far more appealing to my palate. While it is barrel fermented, there is no skin contact or malolactic fermentation here, so this is a balletic wine with both power and grace. Only a month off being bottled (in June 2021), this is probably the one wine in this entire Report which is most similar to the finished object and so I can tell you with every confidence that it is a glittering gem of a wine. Cool, refreshing, tangy and super-long, this is an Aile d’Argent which will work well as a young, feisty wine and also as an older beauty. This is superb winemaking and I think that this is the closet that this wine has got to perfect balance in all of the vintages that I have tasted. Very dense and limpid and immediately offering so much more than the other dry whites from this appellation. Smoky minerality and an amazing floral freshness. White blossom? Then it's surprisingly lightweight on the palate (after that dense nose). This really races along. Sort of like a Victorian child with a hoop, to venture in to Tam territory. Already lots of fun to drink, with low astringency and good fruit/acid balance. Though not especially persistent. It is held firmly in place by a bodice of the finest quality oak and yet I can see the silkiness and succulence of the fruit through this diaphanous outer layer and it is ravishing. There is no white wine in the world like Haut-Brion Blanc and the gravitas and tension here is heart-stopping. The length rolls on for minutes while the citrus, ozone, herb, lanolin and white stone fruit details eddy and flow across the palate. For the briefest of moments it flashes some of its remarkable flesh and then as quickly as a seductive nuance is met, it disappears behind a mineral-soaked layer of impenetrable calm. Sheer heaven from start to finish, I adore this vintage and it is likely to be the longest-lived dry white wine of 2020. Rating: 19.5+/20 Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (Apr 2021)

ThisMarket Insight: There's a big question over Smith Haut's 2019. Its best score ever from Martin and one which put it in the upper echelons from Parker, and yet the price has slipped back by £15. This might well be a short term vs long term trend, as we remain optimistic that the masses will develop and awareness of just how much wine you get for your money here, but even benchmarks for the perfect 2009 don't fill me with confidence.

Tasting note: 90% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Sémillon, 5% Sauvignon Gris. Fabulously ripe, rich nose of tropical fruits, oak (50% new) and sweet spice. There's a lovely depth of fruit, spice & phenolics on the palate, which is perfectly balanced with tangy acidity. This was very much the standout from the whites we tasted. Delicious and very moreish, even now. It will be interesting to see how this develops but it's so good already. Highly recommended.

That said, we love the wine and it deserves to be selling for more - £50 per bottle really won't be much to ask for the 2020 and there's a lot of fun to be had owning verticals.

Tasting note: 70% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Sémillon. Quite reserved on the nose. There's lots of texture and good weight on the palate. Lovely depth of fruit with notes of passionfruit & citrus. Good level of phenolics too and nice acidity. A very well poised wine that should be very approachable in a few years.
