Fronsac

Fronsac is no longer the poor cousin to its grander neighbours Pomerol and Saint Emilion, where it lost huge market share through lack of global marketing. Investment is now fivefold as producers look for the next opportunity and La Dauphine and Moulin Haut Laroque confirm the excellence in this region in 2023.

2023 CHÂTEAU MOULIN HAUT LAROQUE Fronsac

Release date: 28/5/2024

This is a blend of just 60% Merlot, with 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% each Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. The yield was 40 hl/ha, the harvest starting September 20th. The sense of fragrance and purityThis is a blend of just 60% Merlot, with 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% each Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. The yield was 40 hl/ha, the harvest starting September 20th. The sense of fragrance and purity on the nose here is striking, the aromatics expressive and pure, with sweet and perfumed red plum, Dundee cake and rose petals. Curiously, while the nose is all about fragrant fruit, the palate shows plenty of scented oak as well, but with time the roses and plums return, set in a sinewy midpalate, with tense acidity, and a cleanly defined finish. This is charming, with a clearly expressed sense of harmony. Nice potential here. Rating: 91-93 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (Apr 2024)

This is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, picked at a yield of 42 hl/ha, a good result on these organic and biodynamic vineyards. Plenty of sweet fruit character on the nose, blackberry,This is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, picked at a yield of 42 hl/ha, a good result on these organic and biodynamic vineyards. Plenty of sweet fruit character on the nose, blackberry, blackcurrants, roses and violets, very pure and expressive, and clearly leading with well-defined and floral fruit. The palate shows the same charm, with good fruit here combined with more savoury nuances, supple dark fruits wrapped in coffee bean and toast, underneath which there hides a beautiful core of ripe and nicely knit tannins, working within rather than against the wine. This is another fine vintage from the team at La Dauphine. Rating: 92-94 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (Apr 2024)
