Pessac-Léognan
Pessac Léognan was a decent afternoon's work this year. A region with predominantly gravel soils, the intense heat, and hugely variable rainfall required minute by minute evaluation in the vineyard. Guillaume Pouthier of Carmes Haut Brion (sensationally excellent) said it was a year of 'intense involvement' to make a wine that by all accounts has even surpassed their magnificent 2022.
Neighbouring Haut Brion - always the hardest to assess at such a young age here, stands very tall in 2023, as did the much-revamped Château Haut Bailly. Perhaps the highlight was Smith Haut Lafitte, basking in the glow of a recent visit by King Charles III and Queen Camilla, where Charles could see the benefits of the organic viticulture which he had advised owner Florence Cathiard to pursue over a polo match 20 years ago. It is a similar story at Domaine de Chevalier. A thoroughly energising afternoon's tasting and little to fault.

It is deep garnet-purple in color and it waltzes out with showy scents of boysenberry preserves, stewed plums, and fruit cake, followed by underlying suggestions of Indian spices, menthol, graphite, and lavender, with a hint of cardamom. The full-bodied palate is rich and seductively plush, with layers of black fruits and exotic spices, plus mint and floral sparks, finishing long and fragrant. It is so graceful and opulent! A wonderfully perfumed nose, with dried blackberry, plum, currant and dark chocolate. The palate is just lovely, with a broad and lightly velvety substance, medium-bodied, with dark fruits, underpinned by a peppery energy. Great fruit combined with the restrained and sinewy texture of the vintage here, plenty of energy, a sappy drive and a peppery finish; I can see this developing well. The alcohol is about 14% here. This is the highest percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon ever here, beating the 2019 vintage which was about 65%, but future vintages are likely to stay around this figure given the way the climate is changing. This took about one-third of the crop, which was just 26 hl/ha. Beautifully pure Cabernet fruit on the nose, with fresh blackcurrants, gorse and tobacco from the oak. The palate feels immediately understated but quickly reveals its sinew, substance, polish and longevity, with a great depth of fruit wrapped around the ribbons of beautifully knit-together tannins. There is drive and precision here, great energy, with deliriously dark fruits. A beautiful finish and length. This is a fabulous wine which transcends any doubts you might have about the potential hidden within this vintage – you just need to know where to look. So impressive. Tasted twice. The 2023 is a bit shy, especially in its aromatics. In other words, a pretty big departure from so many other recent vintages that have been far showier at this stage. Technical Director Guillaume Pouthier explains that he plans to give the 2023 longer aging, around 24-26 months, so he approached vinification and the early part of aging in a more reductive style than in the past. As always, Les Carmes is marked by its strong presence of Cabernet Franc and use of whole clusters, but as mentioned above, those signatures are less immediately evident than they once were. Les Carmes has been one of Bordeaux's stars over the last few years. I can't wait to see how the 2023 turns out. Drinking range: 2035 - 2073 Rating: 94-96 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (May 2024)

I had no idea it would gain a gold medal score in my notes within seconds of it hitting my system, and this means it stands shoulder-to-shoulder with a very different group of wines in 2023! Firm, buttressed, dark and swirling, the tannins don’t hold back and then invade the palate early, warning the taster that this is not a ‘second wine’ situation. It is a vintage for Le Clarence to stride forward, break rank, and make some noise. There is unexpected intensity and spice here, making this a daring, wayward wine with prodigious length. The perfume sings throughout the experience. It does not disconnect politely from the palate, letting the palate take over – it takes command of everything. Remember, hot vintages overtake terroir, but more controlled vintages allow the terroir to sing, and this property is unique in this and any solar system! I was left not with an image of a planet in my head but another spherical object - a perfectly ripe griotte sitting atop a tee of tannins awaiting a thwack from a mighty golfer. Yes, Le Clarence is that impactful. Rating: 18.5 Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (May 2024)
