Saint Émilion & Satellites
All we can really do about Saint-Émilion in 2022 is gush with praise. Quality has been exceptional – to the point where Cheval Blanc made the unprecedented move not to produce a second wine due to high quality across its vineyards. This it sadly won’t result in many more cases for us – the yields were that low.
Tasting at Troplong Mondot we were on a high, both physically and metaphorically – the highest point in Saint-Émilion and the best wine they have ever produced. The extra rain which fell on the left bank and their deep clay/limestone soil’s ability to retain moisture were the key to success here.
Figeac, taking full advantage of this being the first ‘outstanding’ vintage in their brand-new winery, made a jaw-dropping rendition of their consistently pitch-perfect wine. It was one of a very small clutch we tasted En Primeur which was not just impressive, but multi-faceted and nuanced.
At the more up-and-coming end of the spectrum, Pavie Macquin and Laroque continued to dazzle whilst those with an eye for a real bargain will do well to look further afield, to Lussac and Puisseguin – La Maurianne, with its cooler microclimate, flourished in this warm weather.

TheThe 2022 Troplong Mondot is one of the most elegant wines I have ever tasted here. Seamless and layered, the 2022 caresses the palate with layers of dark-fleshed fruit, spice, leather and mocha. The purity of the fruit is just remarkable. The typical Troplong stature is present, but the tannins are nearly imperceptible. Clean saline notes extend the long, precise finish. This is the highest alcohol level that I found in this vintage, and, as we all know, high alcohols only trouble the palate if they stick out, bringing heat and sourness to the whole. Valandraud always has the knack of loading the most extraordinary intensity into its wines while somehow, and I have no idea how retaining a degree of balance. Granted, this is a very spicy wine, and it nods once or twice to heady Châteauneuf-du-Pape, along its flavour journey. Still, the bottom line is that while this is a brutish fellow, there is a degree of ostentatiousness here that catches the eye and makes me return for another sip. It is the definitive ‘guilty pleasure’ on the Saint-Emilion scene, and while I would love to see more control in all departments, this is, admittedly, great fun. Fresh green leaves, gentle note of petals and lovely mineral cool wind comes in at the back end. Fresh and very long. And such a beautifully sleek finish with lifted aromatics. Matthieu Cuvelier has really pulled it out of the bag this year- and it is hard to find any faut with the 2022 Clos Fourtet. The great vineyard - one block in prime position on the limestone plateau provided irresistible fruit, He kept temperature low for fermentation - to respect fruit and tannic structure. Whole berries, no crushing. Lost a bit of volume this year - but with addition of Grandes Murailles (3/4 of which went into the grand vin) they made up this difference. 40% in new oak this year - which is a big reduction for Clos Fourtet, Matthieu really wants to let the bright fruit - and superb saline edge shine in 2022. He explains that despite the heat this year is not exotic like 2009 and has much more acid and better balance than 2003. He thinks the vine was stressed right from the start of the season - and so it learnt to cope with the excesses. They kept the grass covering the ground to try and keep it cool. L&S (Jun 2023)

The former was picked from September 14th onwards, the Cabernet Franc on the 20th and 26th, the Cabernet Sauvignon on the 27th. The yield was just 31 hl/ha, of which 90% has gone into this blend. The nose here is brimming with sweet black fruits and heady oak, combining to give notes of smouldering toast, liquorice, black bean, damson and black cherry, the latter rich enough to add a touch of kirsch. The palate is just as dark and pure as the nose, with a supple core of dark fruits, savory and salted, with liquorice and lavender notes set against a generous texture, with a bed of very ripe and tightly integrated tannins, which linger in the finish. Tobacco smoke, roasted nuts, ripe plums, and mulberries abound and then, in common with other superb creations this year, the finish is stern, fine-grained, upright and saline. I am usually somewhat perplexed by Monbousquet, as the oak often dominates, and in 2022 it is undoubtedly present, but the fruit is more than robust enough to offset this attack. As always, the theme is black cherries, and the Cabernets here help to heighten the nose and bring some class to the perfume. This successful wine will mature slowly as the tannins are rich and sour. Fear not, this is a big and expressive wine, but it is also a balanced one and my favourite Monbousquet to date. Rating: 17+ Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (May 2023)

AnPrecision and freshness here, with fennel, aniseed, marzipan, cassis, incense, cigar, black cherry, mint leaf and ink, with a slow build of subtle aromatics, and a cooling uplift on the finish. An exceptional wine that will reward long ageing, but captures the luscious, exuberant quality of the vintage without ever stepping over the line. 100% new oak for the barrels, with 20% of the production (Cabernet Franc only) to be aged in larger oak casks. Organic farming (with their own farm growing produce for their restaurants and for vineyard treatments). This vintage also shows one of the benefits of leaving the classification, which has become official as of 2022 - the de Boüard family is able to expand the footprint for the main wine of Angélus this year with 3ha of Château Bellevue (which has now been officially split and passed entirely back into the hands of the co-owners the de Lavaud family), which brings some cool soil Merlot into the blend. Just soA real standout in 2022, Cheval Blanc is hugely successful. The sensation is one of slickness - joyfully broad and sweeping up front - but with a dark, serious line underpinning the whole. Just so approachable. Gorgeously pert dark berries, with the freshness of blueberry too, a citrus splash and a delicate waft of humidor. All delivered with real flair and sophistication, bright lines keep this charging through the palate. Almost irresistible already, full bore, and yet so refined. Really charming, loaded with structure and tannins but they are so fine, so polished that you just want more. They started picking on the 29th of August, which helped capture that freshness, and were finished by the 20th September, including a 10 day break between the early Merlot and the Cabernet. Healthy fruit from their bio-diverse vineyard proved very resilient to the conditions. Judged just right, this is a gem. There is no Petit Cheval this year - as the quality of fruit was so high they used it in the Grand Vin, which must help negate the small crop. (28 HL/HA as opposed to a more normal 35 HL/HA). 53% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon.L&S (May 2023)

As readers will remember, this bottling is no longer a "second wine" per se, but rather draws on some 25 hectares of dedicated vineyards, emphasizing Merlot from the cool terroirs of Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes, complemented by holdings in the gravelly Figeac sector and on clay soils near Angélus itself—with anything that doesn't make the cut relegated to the No. 3 d'Angélus. There is an extra level of charm and sophistication in 2022 Bellefont-Belcier and it is sitting in the glass awaiting your arrival. The top notes of evocative rose petal florals and wild cherries are complete, and the mid-palate has more depth and generosity than I have seen before, but it is the back of the palate, before the finish commences, that is the genuine discovery. Here, the wine expands and gathers gravitas, texture and grip. It is an extra wave of class that has not been present in this wine before. This is a stunning vintage for BB, showing that the hard work being carried out in the vineyards is finally paying off. When the finish eventually arrives, it is incredible, with powerful, ordered tannins that will allow this wine to live for decades. Rating: 18.5+ Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (May 2023)
