These are confident vines, and they make a very confident wine. Cool, calm, sleek, and purple-ink-hued, this is a refined style of Le Pin, featuring a beautiful peacock’s tail of crimson and obsidian fruit. While it yearns to head to the dark side, it stays firmly on the velvety red side of the fence. This is a more forward and welcoming Le Pin than usual, and it already looks utterly ravishing. Black fruit, espresso, licorice, cloves and mocha confer an impression of gravitas. Élevage is 50% new oak, 25% foudre, 8% amphora and the rest in once-used barrels. Something about the oak profile does not feel optimal, as if the oak is mismatched to the wine. Élevage will be critical here, as the 2024 is quite forbidding at this stage. Even so, this is strong showing in a challenging year for a vineyard with relatively young vines that was largely replanted between 2002 and 2010. Deep with rich and ripe tannins and plenty of concentration. Like the other best of the Pomerols, this will be a long-lived wine, especially for the vintage, but still has the floral perfume and elegance of the year, just with more power and depth than most. Ripe tannins and a fine streak of freshness characterise the long finish. Really very lovely wine, as is usual from Marielle and her team at La Conseillante. Lots of sorting required. Vineyard, selection and many passes in the harvest, Densimetric, and again on the sorting table. Only 22 hl/ha. Some chaptalisation was necessary. Medium in body, with lovely depth, Beauregard is impeccably balanced. The oak, for example, is better integrated than it has been in some years. Pretty, delicate, fragile, and pure, this is an innocent and delightfully conversational wine, assuming an angelic stance on the palate with Burgundian curves and an incredibly attractive, almost Barolo-like perfume. I wrote the word epic within seconds because this is an enchanting La Petite Église, and to think this is a second wine – it makes the mind spin! The room will go silent when this wine is poured; such is its grace and deportment.
