CHÂTEAU PAVIE MACQUIN

2022 Grand Cru Classé Saint Emilion

EN PRIMEUR

Creamy depths of colour and flavour, powerful damson and black cherry fruits, this is utterly compelling and beautifully concentrated. No question that the tannins are crowding in through the front of the palate, eager to make an impression, but they quickly soften and widen, and in between is air, spice, flowers, just nuanced and beautiful. The power of limestone in hot vintages on display. 3.4ph, great stuff from this 14.5ha estate, Nicolas Thienpont director. The 2022 Pavie Macquin is a gorgeous wine, not quite as exotic as it can be, which will no doubt please those who find this wine on the richer side within the context of Saint-Émilion. Dark red fruit, chalk, mint, white pepper and spice all race across the palate. Given the small size of the berries and the heat, the winemaking team led by Nicolas Thienpont opted for gentler vinification with fewer punchdowns than the past. The result is a decidedly linear, vibrant Pavie Macquin that bristles with the chalky, saline energy that is a signature of this part of Saint-Émilion, but that has not always been present in a wine that in the past has been more about textural opulence. The blend is 80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. Tasted four times. Drinking range: 2030 - 2052 Rating: 95-97 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2023)

This site can deliver such powerful, tannic wines that I was left especially impressed by the supple, harmonious style of the 2022 Pavie Macquin. Unwinding in the glass with notions of sweet wild berries, rose petals, spices, violets, bay leaf and new oak, it's full-bodied, deep and vibrant, with a layered core of fruit, bright acids and a long, penetrating finish, where powdery structuring tannins make themselves felt but without any asperity. Of course, this remains a deep and powerful wine, but Nicolas Thienpont and his team continue their shift toward more judicious extraction, with excellent results. Rating: 94-96 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Apr 2023)

80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. 70% new oak There is very pronounced fruit here, and a lot of it, too, and it is pumped up and gleamingly glossy. But the muscles are a little too steroidal for all of the superficial glare, and the tannins are shockingly dry. The oak compounds these traits, making this a massive mouthful of wine and not in the slightest bit relaxing. But, give it its due, the fruit is top quality, and so if you have time to wait, this will be a forceful, powerful and densely oaky wine, and it will appeal to a sector of drinkers who like very structured reds. 17++? Rating: 17++? Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (May 2023)

This year more than ever, Pavie Macquin shows contrasted aspects to its style. Behind deep colour one discovers powerful substance whose amazingly intensity is canalized by a vigourous limestone element. This procuces a long, chalky finish that is most invigorating. Time will temper its youthful exuberance. Rating: 95-96 La Revue du Vin de France (May 2023)

The grand vin this year is a blend of 80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. The former was picked from September 14th onwards, the Cabernet Franc on the 20th and 26th, the Cabernet Sauvignon on the 27th. The yield was just 31 hl/ha, of which 90% has gone into this blend. The nose here is brimming with sweet black fruits and heady oak, combining to give notes of smouldering toast, liquorice, black bean, damson and black cherry, the latter rich enough to add a touch of kirsch. The palate is just as dark and pure as the nose, with a supple core of dark fruits, savory and salted, with liquorice and lavender notes set against a generous texture, with a bed of very ripe and tightly integrated tannins, which linger in the finish. An impressive composition, more dark and brooding than many, the tannins a little more robust than some of the top wines of the appellation, which is evident when they appear with a flourish in the finish. Nevertheless, this has fine potential. The alcohol is 14.5%. Tasted twice. Rating: 94-96 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (May 2023)

80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. Cask sample. Dark crimson to the rim. Spicy and exotic on the nose. Generous but lifted on the palate, the limestone terroir manifest. Powerful but refined tannins. Plenty of punch and persistence but handled with care. Clearly one for the cellar. (JL) 14.5% Drinking range: 2030 - 2048 Rating: 17.5 James Lawther MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2023)

A tight and focused red with blackberry, blueberry and crushed-stone character. Salty undertone. It’s full and polished with a flavorful and intense finish. Could move up a notch Rating: 95-96 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (May 2023)

The 2022 Pavie-Macquin was picked 14 to 27 September at 31hL/ha. Black cherries, crème de cassis, crushed violets on the nose. This is the most opulent amongst Nicolas Thienpont's portfolio, though I find just a touch more terroir expression on the Larcis-Ducasse. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, satin-like in texture. A little more tertiary in its second half, with white pepper liberally-sprinkled toward the finish. Quite understated in style, I suspect it will spread its wings during its élevage. Drinking range: 2030 - 2055 Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2023)

Ordering

Prices are all in bond by the case size stated.

Pre-Orders are a firm commitment to buy wines on release, as long as the release price is within the upper and lower price bands set by you on the pre-order form. Pre-orders will be fulfilled subject to availability but providing this firm commitment to buy effectively gives you priority and is a good idea for the most desirable wines.

Wines listed on the website can be ordered in the usual way via the website wishlist order form. You can also send orders directly to our private client team via email. Please note that, for the most sought-after wines, priority will be given to those who ordered the same wines last year and to those that have pre-ordered.

Confirmation

All orders will be confirmed by email and are binding unless written cancellation is received within seven days of email confirmation. Pre-orders are not binding if the release price is above your upper price band.

Invoices are all raised at the in bond price (excluding any duty and VAT) which will become payable at the prevailing rates when the wines arrive in the UK, should you wish to take duty paid delivery.

Payment is required on sight of invoice, by cash, cheque, debit card or bank transfer. We regret we cannot accept credit cards for en primeur orders. We reserve the right to apply a dunning charge of 2% per month on invoices unpaid after 30 days.

  • Shipment to our bond (at LCB Creek Road) and insurance are included in the in bond price.
  • Delivery is free to Lea and Sandeman / Elephant storage accounts, both duty paid and in bond.

Orders below this total will be charged an administration and handling fee of £16.50+ VAT when invoices are issued. Practical notes - how it works

We start a sale in each customer's name and add all their primeur orders to one sale which is invoiced at the end of the campaign (or when the customer wishes). Immediate payment of invoices is then required by cash, cheque, debit card or bank transfer. We and our customers find that having a single invoice for the vintage is the simpler option but please note that confirmed orders are still binding even if the final invoice has not yet been issued.

Please specify on your wishlist order form where you would like the wines shipped on arrival in the UK. If this is to a third-party bonded warehouse, please specify the relevant account details. If the wines are required duty-paid we will issue a second invoice for duty and VAT at the prevailing rate when the wines are available for delivery.

Half-bottles, Magnums and larger bottles.

One of the additional advantages of buying en primeur is being able to order the wine in the format you want. While most of our listings are for 75cl bottles, we can source wines in any format that is offered by the Château. Please note that format requests cannot be changed once wines have been invoiced. Additional charges for special formats do apply and are as follows:-

  • +£18.00 per case of 12 half-bottles
  • +£30.00 per case of 24 half-bottles
  • +£7.50 per case of 3 Magnums (2 bottles equivalent, 1.5 litres each)
  • +£11.00 per case of 6 Magnums
  • +£45.00 per individually boxed Double Magnum (4 bottles equivalent, 3 litres)
  • +£60.00 per individually boxed Imperial (8 bottles equivalent, 6 litres) for Salmanazars, Balthazars, Nebuchadnezzars and Melchiors please enquire for availability and price.
